How to Choose the Perfect Wedding Rings — A Complete Guide for Couples

The choice of wedding rings is one of the most important decisions you make before the wedding — and one of the least discussed. Many couples enter a showroom without knowing what to ask for, what to compare, or how to recognize quality. This guide explains everything you need to know.

1. The profile of the ring — how it looks in cross-section

The profile is the shape of the ring viewed from the side, in cross-section. It is the first thing you feel when wearing it.

  • Flat — flat surface, modern and minimalist look. Looks great in a matte or textured finish.
  • Semi-rounded — slightly rounded on the outside, flat on the inside. The most popular profile — comfortable and classic.
  • Curved (comfort fit / D-shape) — rounded both on the outside and inside. The most comfortable for long daily wear.

Recommendation: If you're unsure, choose semi-rounded or curved — they are easier to wear in daily activities. You can see all available models in our wedding ring collection.

2. Width — how wide should the ring be

The standard width ranges from 2 mm to 7 mm. The choice depends on the proportions of the hand and personal style.

  • 2–3 mm — discreet, feminine, ideal if you already wear an engagement ring alongside it.
  • 4–5 mm — the most balanced option, works for both genders.
  • 6–7 mm — statement, visible, suitable for larger hands or a bolder style.

Practical tip: The optimal width for women is usually 1–2 mm smaller than for men. In the workshop, you can try all options on your finger before making a decision. Learn more about the ordering process in our guide on where to order wedding rings in Bucharest.

3. Finish — the surface of the ring

The finish completely changes the character of the jewelry, even if the shape remains the same.

  • Polished — classic, reflective, looks luxurious. Scratches more easily over time, but can be repolished easily.
  • Brushed — modern, neutral, does not leave fingerprints. Very popular in recent years.
  • Satin — between polished and brushed, with a velvety appearance.
  • Hammered — textured, organic, unique. Each ring looks different.
  • Diamond-cut — fine lines that create a unique play of light.
  • Sandblasted — granular appearance, deep matte, very visually resistant.

Matte and satin finishes hide daily scratches better. The polished finish can be renewed at any time through repolishing — a service available at Moogu workshop.

4. Metal — yellow, white, or rose gold

All Moogu wedding rings are made from high-quality gold. The difference is in color and composition:

  • 14k or 18k yellow gold — the classic color of gold, warm, durable. 14k gold = 58.5% pure gold; 18k gold = 75% pure gold.
  • 14k or 18k white gold — obtained by alloying gold with white metals (palladium, nickel). Usually has a rhodium plating to enhance the whiteness. Read more about what rhodium plating is and how long it lasts.
  • 14k or 18k rose gold — warm, romantic tone, obtained by alloying gold with copper. Very popular for women's wedding rings.
  • Platinum — the rarest and most durable precious metal, hypoallergenic, with a distinct white-gray color.

14k vs 18k: 18k gold is purer and more valuable, but slightly softer. 14k gold is harder and more resistant to wear — ideal for wedding rings worn daily.

5. Gemstones — with or without diamonds

Wedding rings with gemstones add sparkle and personality. The most popular options:

  • Diamonds — classic, eternal. Can be set in channel, pavé, or row. Learn how to choose a quality diamond by reading the complete guide to the 4Cs. Or explore lab-grown diamonds — physically identical to natural ones, at a more affordable price.
  • Sapphires — deep blue or colorless. Hardness 9/10 — perfect for daily wear.
  • Rubies — intense red, symbol of passion.
  • Emeralds — rich green, for a truly unique look.

6. Fingerprint rings — the most personal option

If you want something truly unique, fingerprint rings are the ultimate choice. The fingerprint of each partner is captured and sculpted into the metal — resulting in a pair that no one else in the world has.

7. Inner engraving

Engraving is included in the price of any Moogu wedding ring. You can engrave a date, a short message, GPS coordinates, or any other text with personal significance. Discover all the customization and engraving options.

How to choose wedding rings that match the engagement ring

If she is already wearing an engagement ring, the wedding band must harmonize with it. A few rules:

  • The same metal (white gold with white gold, yellow gold with yellow gold)
  • The same color of the stones, if any
  • Curved profile if the engagement ring has a raised setting

At Moogu, we create wedding rings perfectly compatible with any engagement ring — including those with black diamonds or with colored diamonds.

The next step — visiting the showroom

The best way to choose wedding rings is to hold them in your hand. At the Moogu showroom in Bucharest, you can try all options and make the decision together with your partner. There is no pressure and no obligation to buy on the first visit.
