5 IMPORTANT STEPS IN CREATING CUSTOM MADE JEWELRY

This article will tell you the story of a piece of jewelry handcrafted to the highest standards, from the first sketch drawn to the finished product, the precious piece you've dreamed of.

Step 1: The design of a custom made jewelry

The first step is to finalize the design of the precious piece to be created. The jeweler, designer and/or customer work together to give the final shape to the idea and design of the piece of jewelry. Some jewelers are excellent designers and excel at thinking "outside the box". Other jewelers are more technical and rely on the designer or client to tell them clearly what they would like to create. Either way, it is important to have a jeweler involved in the design process to ensure that there will be no structural issues in the design.

Step 2: Making a custom made jewelry

Custom made jewelry can be created in two ways. 

Handcrafting: The first option for making a piece of jewelry is handcrafting the product. This means that the jeweler with the saw, pliers, various other professional tools and the flame soldering machine forms the metal into the desired shape. Although a traditional, successful method, this process is sometimes tedious, labor intensive, and has its limitations.
The other method has more steps, but generally allows for more intricate control and detail:

Waxing: This is the second way in which jewelry can be made. First, the piece is sculpted in wax to the exact scale of the final piece. More organic jewelry will often be carved by hand. For technical parts that require a lot of precise detail, 3D design and printing may be possible. The jewelry can be built and modified on the computer to create a scaled version of the final piece.
Casting Process: Once the wax piece is complete, the next step is to cast the jewelry in metal. The wax piece is coated in a plaster-like substance that dries and becomes hard. The wax is then heated from the plaster mold, leaving behind a kind of cavity. The molten metal is then poured into the plaster cavity and allowed to cool. This is a process known as "lost wax casting" or precision casting.
Step 3: Pre-polishing a custom made piece of jewelry

After the gem has been cast in gold (or platinum, carbon or silver), it is cleaned and polished. At this point, the tool marks are removed and the precious piece is checked for any defects caused during the casting process.

Step 4: Mounting diamonds and/or gemstones

If the jewelry has diamonds and/or precious stones, they will be mounted at this time. For this stage, the jeweler tools in a clean and precise work area with the meticulous care and attention to detail required to create the much-dreamed-of piece of jewelry.

Step 5: Polishing a custom made piece of jewelry

The bespoke piece of jewelery is polished a final time to remove any remaining minor imperfections. The piece of jewelry is also surgically cleaned to remove any oil or residue from the jeweler's hands and the polishing compounds used.

At this point, the custom made jewelry is ready to be packaged in a jewelry box to be presented to the excited new owner! In the excitement of finally seeing your long-dreamed piece of jewelry, it's important to remember the following things:

Try the gem. If we are talking about a ring, it should fit perfectly on the finger for which you wanted to make this purchase.
Ask the jeweler if there are any special care recommendations.
Check if the store offers any kind of warranty for the custom jewelry in case something unexpected happens.
