5 IMPORTANT STEPS IN CREATING CUSTOM MADE JEWELRY
This article will tell you the story of a piece of jewelry created by hand to the highest standards, from the first drawn sketch to the finished product, the precious piece you have dreamed of.
Step 1: Designing a custom made jewelry piece
The first step involves finalizing the design of the precious piece that is to be created. The jeweler, designer, and/or client work together to give the final shape to the idea and design of the jewelry. Some jewelers are excellent designers and excel at thinking 'outside the box.' Other jewelers are more technical and rely on the designer or client to clearly tell them what they would like to create. Regardless, it is important for a jeweler to be involved in the design process to ensure that there will be no structural issues in the design.
Tip: Both before and after the design has been agreed upon, make sure you have checked the price with the jeweler before starting any precious project.
Step 2: Creating a custom made jewelry piece
Custom made jewelry can be created in two ways.
Handmade: The first option for creating a piece of jewelry is the manual crafting of the product. This means that the jeweler uses a saw, pliers, various other professional tools, and a flame soldering machine to shape the metal into the desired form. Although it is a traditional, successful method, this process can sometimes be tiring, labor-intensive, and has its limitations.
The other method has several steps, but generally allows for more control and complicated details:
Wax modeling: This is the second way jewelry can be made. First, the piece is sculpted in wax to the exact scale of the final piece. Many organic jewelry pieces will often be hand-sculpted. For technical pieces that require a lot of precise details, 3D design and printing may be possible. The jewelry can be built and modified on a computer, and then a scaled version of the final piece can be created.
The casting process: Once the wax piece is finished, the next step is to cast the jewelry in metal. The wax piece is wrapped in a plaster-like substance, which dries and hardens. The wax is then heated out of the plaster mold, leaving behind a kind of cavity. Then, the molten metal is poured into the plaster cavity and left to cool. This is a process known as 'lost wax casting' or precision casting.
Step 3: Pre-polishing a custom-made jewelry
After the jewelry has been cast in gold (or platinum, carbon, or silver), it is cleaned and polished. At this moment, the tool markings are removed and the precious piece is checked for any defects caused during the casting process.
Step 4: Setting the diamonds and/or precious stones
If the jewelry has diamonds and/or precious stones, they will be set at this moment. For this stage, the jeweler works in a clean and precise workspace, with meticulous care and heightened attention to the details necessary to create the long-desired jewelry.
Step 5: Polishing a custom-made jewelry
The custom jewelry is polished one last time to remove any remaining minor imperfections. The piece of jewelry is also surgically cleaned to remove any oil or residue from the jeweler's hands and from the polishing compounds used.
At this moment, the custom-made jewelry is ready packed in a jewelry box, to be presented to the excited new owner! In the excitement of finally seeing your long-desired piece of jewelry, it is important to remember the following things:
Try on the jewelry. If we are talking about a ring, it should fit perfectly on the finger for which you wanted to make this purchase.
Ask the jeweler if there are any special care recommendations.
Check if the store offers any kind of warranty for the customized jewelry in case something unexpected happens.
