Everything about chains and how they can be worn

Reference moments in the history of chains

5000 years ago, chains were made from natural materials such as shells, stones, bones, or shells and were worn decoratively around the neck, often as a talisman.

The remnants of Ancient Egypt revealed that pharaohs wore chains with large pendants, which either depicted scenes dedicated to the gods or were in the form of sacred symbols (such as the scarab).

In ancient Greece, gold was abundant, and therefore the first gold chains with pendants appeared.

In the 18th century, precious stones (such as rubies, diamonds, sapphires, and emeralds) became accessories in the decoration of necklaces and pendants.

An important reference moment is the 1900s, when pocket watches - the staple of men's fashion at the time - were attached to men's suits with the help of chains.

In Europe, the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements influenced the style and design of many chains with pendants, incorporating both geometric patterns and the aesthetic appearance of animals, such as peacocks or butterflies.

The influence of music had a great impact on fashion in the 60s, when chains were worn in multiple layers and medallions were about to make their debut. In the 70s and 80s, the influence of rap and hip-hop styles grew, and chains became increasingly extravagant.

In the following two decades, massive chains became a reference cultural element for urban style.

The religious status of chains

In addition to the symbolism offered by fashion, chains have always had a religious status. For example, in the Egyptian era, people worshipped multiple deities and shaped their jewelry to present their devotions - the snake, scarab, falcon, lotus, and Ankh were the main symbols.

Christianity also plays a major role, the most sought-after religious chain being the one with the cross of Jesus.

A religious piece is for many an important gift and is sometimes the first gift given to a newborn. Whether it is a simple gold chain with a cross for the Christian believer, or a chain with a Star of David, Hamsa, or Celtic knot for other religious groups, this jewelry is always a beautiful and meaningful gift.

Types of chains

Chains come in a variety of sizes - from very thin to massive - and shapes - braided, flat, round, snake-type, semi-rigid, or fixed.

In terms of length, chains vary from very short ones that sit at the base of the neck - like chokers - to very long ones with pendants.

A range of metals, such as natural copper, gold, silver, and even platinum, were used by ancient jewelry makers to create chains, but modern technology has allowed the introduction of new metals - white gold, steel, and new techniques - galvanization, laser engraving, etc.

The versatility of chains

As accessories, chains are used to make necklaces, but also bracelets for the hand and foot, which can in turn be decorated with pendants or beads. The chain can be attached to the pocket watch from the vest or jacket for a classic style or from jeans for a modern approach. It can be used as an accessory for reading glasses or to connect jewelry (a nose ring to an earring or a ring from a finger to a bracelet on the hand). Some women today also wear fine chains at the waist, over clothing or as part of a beach outfit.

A chain can be passed down from generation to generation. It is a fashion accessory, culture, class, status, and often has sentimental value.
